North winds clean it up, southwest swell gives the most reliable energy, and the best banks move along the beach fast; the middle of the ebb usually sharpens the sandbars, while the beach still works across the full tide window.
East-setting currents and rips can drag you if you drift off the main peaks.
Park in the roadside pull-offs and walk down the stairs.
Summer crowds build around the better sections, but the beach is broad enough to spread out.
